Ben Davidson was the father of murder victim Melanie Cavanagh, who was killed when she discovered that her husband Samuel was having an affair, and was planning to leave him and take their two daughters.
Having discovered his son-in-law's role in his daughter's death four years after it happened, Ben confronted Samuel one night, demanding the truth at gunpoint. He then shot Samuel dead and was able to arrange the scene as a staged mugging that would seem to be nothing but random violence, subsequently allowing Ben and his wife, Julie, to gain custody of his granddaughters.
When Melanie's body was found, the team deduced Samuel's role in her death and Ben's role in his. However, Ben was able to avoid incriminating himself even when directly questioned, simply saying that their theory about his role sounded good without saying that it was true.

- Ben Davidson marks the only case that Castle and Beckett technically didn't solve as they never received an explicit confirmation of his role in Sam Cavanagh's death, even if the evidence strongly indicated that he was responsible.
