Stan Banks is the murder victim in "The Blue Butterfly", a former accountant turned treasure hunter. He seems to have lived a largely blameless life, but unfortunately his driven search for the bejewelled necklace took him way out of his depth, and he was killed.

When Stan found a Spanish dubloon, it inspired him to become a treasure hunter. His obsession with his new occupation resulted in his marriage separation. Eventually seeing professional treasure hunter Clyde Bellasco's documentary on his search for the Blue Butterfly necklace that went missing in 1947 inspired Stan to search for it himself. He learned that the necklace was last seen at the Pennybaker Club. Somehow, he deduced that the last people to have possessed it were P.I. Joe Flynn and Vera Mulqueen, mobster Tom Dempsey's moll, reportedly shot and burned in Joe's car. He tracked down Joe's secretary's granddaughter and purchased Joe's journal from her, as well as reviewed the old police file regarding Joe and Vera's murder. Stan later met with Tom Dempsey III, the old mobster's grandson, posing a biographer under an pseudonym, wanting to document Dempsey the First's good side.

Eventually, club singer Betsy Sinclair, who used to hang around the Pennybaker Club, passed away and Stan attended her funeral. While there, he bumped into Jerry Maddox and questioned his relationship to Sinclair. Jerry claimed that he was a bartender at the club. Stan then had to leave when Dempsey the Third spotted him. Stan later met with Bellasco and told him all his findings, things that not even the latter knew about, but left again, as Dempsey was following him to see what he was up to. Stan later deduced that he was Joe and his wife Viola was Vera, having faked their deaths. He confronted the old couple, threatening to expose them if they didn't tell him the location of the Blue Butterfly. Once they told him its hiding place, Stan managed to recover the jewel, only to find Bellasco, staking out the place and not wanting Stan to seize his glory. being chloroformed by the Maddoxs' caretaker, Frankie Hunsacker, who was also the Joe's secretary's great-grandson. Frankie had been secretly and slowly attempting to get the necklace too from the Maddoxs and was angry at how easily Stan bullied it out of them. Stan wrestling with Frankie over the gun and accidentally shot.
