John Raglan was the presiding detective in Johanna Beckett's murder. ("A Chill Goes Through Her Veins")

He was previously the arresting officer on Bob Armen's case, but in reality he and his friend Gary McCallister and their rookie pal Roy Montgomery had killed Armen ("Knockout"), the three of them framing mobster Joe Pulgatti for Armen's death. ("Knockdown")

Years later, upon learning that he was dying of lymphoma, Raglan attempted to tell Kate Beckett the truth about her mother's death during a meeting in a diner (Kate being accompanied by Richard Castle as Raglan had asked that she not bring any cops with her), but he was shot by Hal Lockwood from a nearby building before he could say anything incriminating.
