Maxwell Haverstock, known as Max, is a former colleague of the victim, John Allen, in "Deep in Death", and at first he looks good for murder.
When Beckett and Castle see him, however, the writer points out that "this guy couldn't throw a wet sponge off the roof, let alone a body".
Max is clearly nervous about his interview with the police, but warms to his theme when discussing his dismissal and how he'll pay back those responsible.
The little tirade is entirely derailed when Beckett makes it clear she thinks he's talking about his revenge killing of John. Max tells the duo that John was fired at the same time he was, only he (Max) was lucky enough to find another position quite quickly. In his nervousness he quips that his old colleague "doesn't have to look for one anymore."
