Mitch Yancey is a bandmate of Dale Landers in "Particle Equation".
However, he had even more in common with him than that. Dale's girlfriend, Sonya Gilbert, was secretly also Mitch's girlfriend, but when Mitch tried to make her break up with Dale, she dumped him instead.
So Mitch devised an elaborate, elegant plan for murder. He stole a key for Sonya's place, and hid there one evening while the couple was out on the town.
When they returned, Sonya activated the security to which, as her ex, he knew the code, and they settled in for the night. Mitch roofied their drinks, and when they passed out he put her on the bed, and then shot Sonya repeatedly in the chest, using a pillow as a primitive muffler.
He then planted the gun on Dale, so as to put his fingerprints on it, and hid under the bed. Dale woke, found the gun in his hand and saw the body on the bed, panicked, and deactivated the security system and fled the scene.
There were several witnesses to his presumably noisy and certainly disorganized departure. Soon after, Mitch was able to slip away unnoticed and was eventually apprehended by Beckett, Castle and their team.
