Tom Walters was the nephew of Hank Walters, the late neighbor of Jay Hixton. He lives in New York and is registered as Hank’s only relative. He became a suspect in Jay Hixton’s murder, because Hixton’s lottery ticket, worth 117 million dollars, belonged to his uncle, who passed away on the same day as the numbers were drawn. Hixton had brought the ticket for Hank, but kept it for himself after Hank’s death. Tom was shocked upon learning the truth and the possibility that he might have inherited over hundred million dollars. But upon being accused of murder, since he was Hank’s only relation and the only one who would have a motive to resent Hixton, Tom explained that Hank had a sort of stepson from an old relationship, and whom Hank remained in touch with and spent his holidays with. He confirmed Castle’s guess that the birthday was 4-19-79, which led the police to Shawn York.
Afterwards the fate of the lottery millions was left to lawyers, but if they decide that Hank was the real owner of the ticket, Tom might get them, if he was Hank’s heir.
